Core Fantasy Terms
SALARY CAP: A budget limit for building your fantasy roster. Each driver has a price, and your total roster cannot exceed the cap.
DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports): Single-race contests on platforms like DraftKings and FanDuel where you build a new salary-capped lineup for each event.
GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool): A DFS tournament with a fixed prize pool regardless of how many entries participate.
FLOOR: The minimum realistic fantasy score for a driver in a given race. High-floor drivers consistently produce decent scores.
CEILING: The maximum realistic fantasy score for a driver. High-ceiling drivers have the potential for monster performances.
OWNERSHIP PERCENTAGE: In DFS, the percentage of lineups that include a specific driver. Low ownership means less competition from that pick.
PLACE DIFFERENTIAL: The difference between starting position and finishing position. Many DFS platforms award bonus points for positive place differential.
NASCAR-Specific Terms for Fantasy
STAGE POINTS: Points awarded at the end of each stage (NASCAR races have 3 stages). The top 10 finishers in each stage earn stage points.
GREEN FLAG SPEED: Average speed during uninterrupted green flag racing. The most predictive practice metric for race performance.
LONG RUN: A sustained period of green flag racing (typically 15+ laps). Some drivers are ‘long run’ cars — they get faster as tires wear.
SHORT RUN: A brief green flag run after a restart. ‘Short run’ cars fire off fast on fresh tires but fade as runs get longer.
CLEAN AIR: The aerodynamic advantage of running at the front with no cars ahead disturbing the air. Clean air is a massive advantage at intermediate tracks.
DIRTY AIR: Turbulent air behind other cars that reduces downforce and handling. Drivers stuck in dirty air lose time and tire life.
DNF (Did Not Finish): A driver who doesn’t complete the race due to a crash, mechanical failure, or other issue. DNFs are fantasy killers.
RESTRICTOR PLATE / SUPERSPEEDWAY PACKAGE: The engine/aero configuration used at Daytona and Talladega that creates pack racing.
Strategy Terms
STACKING: In DFS, selecting multiple drivers from the same team to create correlated upside. If the team brings a fast car, all their drivers benefit.
FADING: Deliberately avoiding a popular driver you believe is overvalued or in a bad matchup. Fading is a key DFS tournament strategy.
CONTRARIAN PLAY: Picking a low-ownership driver in DFS tournaments to differentiate your lineup from the field.
ANCHORING: Building your lineup around 1-2 premium ‘anchor’ drivers and filling the rest with value plays.
MATCHUP-BASED: Adjusting your lineup based on the specific track type and its historical patterns rather than using the same drivers every week.
